What's Changing
- The gym is opening earlier across the week
- On weekdays, gym access now starts at 5.30am (half an hour earlier than before)
- On Saturdays, the gym will open at 6.00am and at 7.00am on Sundays
- The entire centre will close slightly earlier on Friday evenings
Why are the hours changing?
- Our opening hours have stayed largely the same for over 10 years. In that time, a lot has changed. Whitehorse's population has grown by more than 11%, Aqualink membership has grown by around 25%, and more than 2,500 community members shared their feedback on when they want to use the centres.
- The updated hours are based on how our community uses the facility – based on attendance data, your feedback, and benchmarking against similar leisure centres across Melbourne.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the gym changing but not the pool?
The gym and aquatic areas are used differently and at different times of day. Attendance data shows strong demand for earlier gym access. The pools, however, are already in active use during those early morning hours by community groups, including swim schools.
Like other modern leisure centres, we're tailoring hours to reflect how each part of the facility is used, rather than applying the same times across the board. This means we can better meet the needs of the whole community, support important programs such as water safety and swim education, and support a more natural flow across the facility throughout the day.
Are the aquatic hours changing?
Only slightly. On Friday evenings, the entire centre will be closing earlier, and aquatic areas will now close at 9.15pm to reflect this. As always, aquatic areas begin closing 15 minutes before centre close.
Are the stadium/courts hours changing?
One change. On Friday evenings, the stadium will now close at 9.30pm, in line with overall facility operations. All other stadium hours remain the same.
Are group fitness class times changing?
Not from 6 July. Existing group fitness timetables will remain in place when the new hours start. Any future timetable changes will be communicated separately in advance.
Are public holiday hours changing?
No. Public holiday hours are not changing. All services will continue to operate from 8.00am to 8.00pm on public holidays, with aquatic areas closing 15 minutes before centre close.
How was this decision made?
The review involved an independent consultant, benchmarking against comparable leisure facilities, analysis of attendance and usage data, population growth projections, community consultation with more than 2,500 participants, and financial and operational assessments.
The outcome was a targeted adjustment that improves customer access while maintaining operational sustainability. The decision was endorsed by councillors as part of the leisure optimisation report.
