Jake’s Tips for Winter

Starting a new gym program over winter can be difficult. Here are some tips from  Jake Alway, our new Health and Fitness Manager, to get you started and keep you going!

Jake is focused on creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels supported in their fitness goals, regardless of their journey. He is here to help you push your limits and achieve your personal best.

Make it fun!

If you do workouts that you like, you’re more likely to stick to it.
Collaborate with one of our trainers to ensure you have a program that is good for you and one you see value in doing. Particularly in the beginning, when you’re struggling with establishing a new gym routine and maintaining motivation throughout the colder months, having a program you believe in and enjoy can make all the difference in keeping you on your fitness journey.

Stick with it!

The first few weeks are always the hardest.
Remember to keep at it! Habits don’t form overnight. When you feel like giving up, remember why you started. Push through the plateau in the beginning - you'll thank yourself later.

Don’t wait until Monday.

“What day is it?” asked Pooh.
“It’s today,” squeaked Piglet.
“My favourite day,” said Pooh.”

Today is the best day, so stop putting it off until tomorrow. What can you do today? If we started our fitness journey the moment we first thought of it, how much further would we be? Why can’t 4:00 PM on a Thursday or 8:00 AM on Saturday be your new Monday?

Redefine your expectations of exercise.

You have the freedom to structure your exercise routine as you see fit. Whether it's 20 minutes at the gym, 10 minutes at home, or even 5 minutes of stretching at intervals, the choice is yours. Just be realistic about what fits into your schedule. Once you have established a routine, start with small goals and gradually increase your exercise time.

Fuelling and hydration are crucial.

Remember, extra energy expenditure requires proper fuelling. This means having something in your system to sustain you during your workouts, staying hydrated to maintain fluids and temperature regulation, and refuelling after exercise to replenish lost stores and energize you for the rest of your day.
